Price and Cost Competitiveness - Data Section

The quarterly report on price and cost competitiveness presents recent changes in the nominal and real effective exchange rates of the euro area, of the individual EU Member States and several non-EU countries.

Last update: 14 March 2024

The trade data used to calculate export weights for NEER and REER has been updated from 2019 up to 2021 according to the methodology; among aggregates considered in the trade data, “Europe” has been replaced by a new aggregate composed of the following countries: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia (until 1993), Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Turkiye, Ukraine, Yugoslavia (until 2006), Europe n.s., as the old “Europe” aggregate has been discontinued in the source. Lastly, 2022 weights are not yet included to avoid possible distortions in preliminary trade data.

The deflator data for Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Export Price Index (XPI), and Unit Labour Cost (ULC) is updated biannually, in line with the European Commission's Spring and Autumn Forecast publications. Consequently, please note that the Real Effective Exchange Rates (REERs) derived from these deflators for periods subsequent to the latest Forecast publication are based on projections.
