Portugal

All Portuguese euro coins are inspired by the origins of the history of Portugal, and were designed by Vítor Manuel Fernandes dos Santos.

They all show seals of Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal (1109-1185), encircled by castles and coats of arms: the 1144 seal is on the €1 and €2 coins; the 1142 seal is on the 10, 20 and 50-cent coins, and the very first royal seal of 1134 is on the 1, 2 and 5-cent coins.

The edge lettering on the €2 coin consists of five coats of arms and seven castles equally spaced.
