San Marino

There are two different series of euro coins from San Marino in circulation.

2017

2 euro = the portrait of Saint Marino, detail of a painting by Giovan Battista Urbinelli, the date 2017, the mintmark of the Italian Mint ‘R’, the legend ‘San Marino’, AL initials of the artist, arched 12 stars; The edge-lettering of the 2-euro coin is: 2 *, repeated six times, alternately upright and inverted.

50 euro cent = the portrait of Saint Marino, detail of a painting by Emilio Retrosi, the date 2017, the mintmark of the Italian Mint ‘R’, the legend ‘San Marino’, AL initials of the artist, arched 12 stars;

20 euro cent = Mount Titano with the three Towers, the date 2017, the mintmark of the Italian Mint ‘R’, the legend ‘San Marino’, AL initials of the artist, arched 12 stars;

10 euro cent = Church of St Francis, the date 2017, the mintmark of the Italian Mint ‘R’, the legend ‘San Marino’, AL initials of the artist, arched 12 stars;

5 euro cent = Church of St Quirinus, the date 2017, the mintmark of the Italian Mint ‘R’, the legend ‘San Marino’, AL initials of the artist, arched 12 stars;

The €2 coin features the Palazzo Pubblico or government building of San Marino. The edge lettering is ‘2*’, repeated six times, alternately upright and inverted.

The €1 coin depicts the coat of arms of the Republic of San Marino.

The 50-cent coin features the three towers of the city – Guaita, Cesta and Montale. The 20-cent coin shows Saint Marinus – after whom the republic is named – holding the city in his hand, from a canvas by Il Guercino (1591-1666). The 10-cent coin features the Basilica of San Marino.

The 5-cent and 1-cent coins show the Guaita and the Montale towers respectively (also featured on the 50-cent coin), and the 2-cent coin depicts the Statue of Liberty.
