Summary
Budgets are a crucial instrument for climate action and the green transition. Faced with the imminent environmental threats, governments are increasingly deploying or planning to deploy green budgeting to better align their policies with climate and environmental commitments. Green budgeting means using the tools of budgetary policymaking to help achieve climate and environmental goals.
In this event, the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development will exchange views on the merits, main features and challenges of green budgeting. The discussion is framed by a study produced by the three institutions, which summarises common views and approaches on the topic. The study focuses on those components that ensure the effectiveness of green budgeting, and precisely, a strategic framework, policy tools, institutional design, transparency and accountability. Ways on how each institution supports the development of green budgeting practices will also be presented.
This event is part of the EU Pavillion programme at COP26 that is supported by a dedicated website which will serve as the one-stop platform for all information and registration to the EU side events.
