The report follows Romania’s adoption of a Fiscal Strategy for 2020-2022 which projects that Romania’s general government deficit will exceed the 3% reference value provided for in the Treaty in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The report concludes that Romania is not compliant with the deficit criterion as defined in the Treaty and that the opening of an Excessive Deficit Procedure is, therefore, warranted.
As an immediate next step, the Economic and Financial Committee is expected to formulate its opinion on the report within the next two weeks. The report is available here.
