The €2 coin shows the portrait of France Prešeren, Slovenia's greatest poet, together with the line 'Shivé naj vsi naródi' (God’s blessing on all nations) in his handwriting. The words are taken from the seventh verse of his poem Zdravlijca (‘A Toast’), which is also the Slovenian national anthem. The edge lettering consists of the word SLOVENIJA followed by an engraved dot.
The €1 coin features the bust of Primož Trubar, the author of the first printed book in Slovenian (1550).
The 10, 20 and 50-cent coins depict, respectively, architect Jože Plečnik’s unrealised plans for the Slovenian Parliament, known as the ‘Cathedral of Freedom’; two Lipizzaner horses; and Mount Triglav (Slovenia’s highest mountain).
The 1, 2 and 5-cent coins feature, respectively, a stork, the ancient Sovereign Enthronement Stone, and a man sowing stars.
The Slovenian euro coins were also the first to bear the new design of the common face of the €1 and €2 coins, and 10, 20 and 50-cent coins, introduced throughout the euro area as from 2007.
