Ireland – National Competitiveness Council

The National Competitiveness and Productivity Council is an independent council established by government decision in 1997. It  reports to the Taoiseach and the Government through the Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, on key competitiveness and productivity issues facing the Irish economy and offers recommendations on policy actions required to enhance Ireland’s competitive position.

The Council includes employer and trade union representatives and people with relevant expertise in competitiveness and productivity policy. The Strategic Policy Division of the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation provides the Council with research and secretariat support.

In accordance with the European Council recommendation of September 2016 on the establishment of National Productivity Boards, the Government mandated the National Competitiveness and Productivity Council as the body responsible for analysing developments and policies in the field of productivity and competitiveness in Ireland in March 2018.
