Finland

Finland chose three designs based upon motifs similar to those used before on national coins.

The €2 coin shows cloudberries and cloudberry flowers from Lapland and was designed in 1988 by Raimo Heino. The edge lettering consists of the words ‘SUOMI FINLAND ***’, where * represents three lion heads.

The €1 coin depicts two flying swans designed by Pertti Mäkinen on the occasion of a competition for a coin to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Finnish independence.

The 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50-cent coins reproduces the design of a heraldic lion with a sword created by sculptor Heikki Häiväoja, which was used on the 1-markka coin between 1964 and 1993.
